DG010 Deniz Tafaghodi — Each Moment Takes A Piece Away

00:00 / 00:00

We’re delighted to release “Each Moment Takes A Piece Away”—a conceptual, performative art project by sound artist and multidisciplinary composer Deniz Tafaghodi from Canada.

“This release documents an ongoing electroacoustic work developed from the material remnants of a broken clay pot. Fractured during a moment of rupture, the object was subsequently recontextualized as a performative instrument. Since then, its fragments have undergone repeated cycles of performance, recording, and documentation. Through this sustained use, the material has gradually eroded, positioning wear not as deterioration but as an integral component of the work’s ongoing concept.
Side A presents the composition in its full recorded form. The clay fragments are activated through direct interaction, generating a field of friction, resonance, and chance. These live performances are interwoven with recordings from earlier stages of the object’s material status and performative history, revealing layered temporalities and material decay.
Side B turns its attention toward the margins of the compositional process. It is constructed from room recordings captured at the location where the piece was conceptualized, alongside environmental recordings from the site where the project first took shape. Also present are the incidental sounds of the performer’s clothing, body movements, and tactile interactions with material. While such sounds would ordinarily remain outside the frame of composition, they are brought into the foreground, drawing attention to the environments, forms of labour, and embodied presence that underpin the work. Accompanying the release is a graphic notation of the composition. The score serves both as a visual archive and as a performance guide.
Each performance removes something from the instrument. New fractures produce new sounds while reducing the material from which those sounds can emerge. The work exists within this contradiction: preservation through documentation, disappearance through use.
What remains is not the object itself, but a growing archive of its transformation.” —Deniz Tafaghodi
